Chapter 36 - September

It always seems to me that a lot of good books are published in September. This time of year is perfect for starting something new, like a reading habit or a book club, so there are lots of new books to choose from. I also think that publishers are racheting up their book selections in the hope that people will start making their Christmas lists and buying their presents.

This September and October, from what I have seen, seem to be terrific for new books. Many of my favorite authors have books coming out as well as a few debut novels by unknown authors. Here are some books which are sitting on my TBR pile.

Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty - Having spent a lot of time on planes lately, this one is a little chilling but here goes. Ashley Patel likes her job as a flight attendant. Her plane is packed, they are ready to go and as she looks around everything seems fine. The man in 4C keeps checking his watch as he doesn't want to miss his daughter's recital. A young couple is on their honeymoon, she is still in her wedding dress. Another man is flying home after attending a funeral. The plane is delayed and suddenly a woman stands up and tells each person when and how they will die. If you got this information what would you do?

We Solve Murders by Richard Osman - This is the start of a new series by Osman, the author of The Thursday Murder Club books. Steve Wheeler is a retired detective. Periodically he gets called in to help with an investigation but he is enjoying the quiet of retirement. Amy Wheeler, his daughter-in-law, is in private security and is currently protecting a famous author on a remote island. When a dead body and a bag of cash wash up on the island, Amy knows who to call.

The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave - Liam Noone is a hotel magnate with many ex-wives and children. When he falls to his death from his cliffside California cottage. His daughter Nora and her estranged brother Sam don't believe Liam's death was just an accident. As they start to dig a little, they uncover more secrets than they could imagine. Laura Dave's previous novel was The Last Thing He Told Me, a New York Times bestseller.

The Wildes by Louis Bayard - I love that Bayard's historical fiction is somewhat provocative or rather I guess he writes about provocative people. In this novel he writes about Oscar Wilde, his wife and family, and his affair with the young poet, Lord Alfred Douglas. Having read many of Bayard’s novels and having enjoyed them all, I am excited to have this one on my TBR pile.

Creation Lake by Rachel Kushner - I love a good spy novel, (think Red Sparrow seriers by Jason Matthews or The Expats by Chris Pavone), so when I read about Creation Lake I had to include it on my TBR pile. An American woman “Sadie Smith” is a secret agent sent to do dirty work in France. Her lover Lucien has, of course, been targeted by her for his useful intelligence and as Sadie’s handlers get more and more demanding Sadie falls deeper into a trap she may not get out of.

So what's on your TBR pile for the fall?
