Can you believe July is over and August is here already? It is crazy to me that the years go by so quickly now. Remember that time when summer seemed to go on forever? When June to September actually meant a really great time with your friends and family vacations? Doesn't seem that long ago to me! One good thing about August though is that there are plenty of new books being published. (I mean one does have to look on the bright side, after all.)
I honestly thought that once I retired I'd have more time for reading than when I was working. Now it seems that I am always doing other things like traveling and having visitors. I still try to take at least an hour from each day and read. I find myself enjoying my reading time a lot and slowing it down so I can really savor the books I've read.
Here are some which have made my August list of books I want to read.
Something To Look Forward To by Fannie Flagg - Flagg is probaby best known for her Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe but really almost any book of hers, and she has written twelve, are really good reads. Her latest is a series of vignettes of people all over the country trying to find happiness. Of course, all the stories tie together in the end. If you've not read Fannie Flagg you really should try her.
The Book of Lost Hours by Hayley Gelfuro - This book is a mix of fantasy and nostalgia. The time space is a library of memories accessed only by special watches passed from father to son. In 1938, eleven year old Lisavet Levy finds herself trapped in the library waiting for her watchmaker father to return to her. When he doesn't she grows up among the books until she realizes that government agents are entering the time space to destroy books and maintain their preferred version of history. Trying to save the truth in her own memory book she has help from a very unexpected source.
The Lost Baker of Vienna by Sharon Kurtzman - This is a historical novel based on a true story. When a young woman's grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, dies she is devastated. She sets out to discover exactly what happened to her family during World War II.
Every Summer After by Carly Fortune - Persephone Fraser has left her teenage years behind even though it meant leaving her heart as well. When a phone call takes her back to her hometown Percy may have a chance to change her future if she is brave enough to take it...and if she can forgive her younger self.
We Are All Guilty Here by Karen Slaughter - Who doesn't love Karen Slaughter, a thriller author of incredible talent? In her latest, the first of a new series, Emmy Clifton, a police officer, is on the hunt for for two teenage girls. One of them is her daughter's best friend who had turned to Emmy for help before she disappeared.
What's on your August list? Anything I might have missed? Let me know.
