Chapter 35 - Something Wicked This Way Comes

I have mentioned before that for me summer is a better time to read psychological thrillers or scarier books. If I am on the beach or sitting by the pool, the darkness of a book doesn't seem so dark in the summer sunshine. I always have to intersperse this kind of book with lighter reads as well. (But I do that with World War II fiction too!)

This year, some of the best thriller writers have come out with new books which I have just gobbled up. They are fast reads and just perfect for a day in the sun. Here are some I've enjoyed this summer.

His and Hers by Alice Feeney - The author of Sometimes I Lie and I Know Who You Are has come up with another twisty tale. There is a murder, an investigation, a reporter and a detective and it might be the reporter (Hers) or the detective (His) who did it or not. Oddly, they both knew the victim.

The Dilemma by B.A. Paris - I loved Paris's book Behind Closed Doors and this one was also a page turner. While not as dark as some other books here, the book teems with family secrets, guilt, shame and heartbreak as a couple prepare for the wife's birthday party.

The Shadows by Alex North - North's The Whisper Man (which is soon to be a movie) was scary and good. This new one is even darker if that is possible. Paul Adams thought his past was behind him, but a murder that took place 25 years ago is suddenly back in his life. Is it the same person or just a copycat?

Home Before Dark by Riley Sager - Sager thrilled readers with his book, The Last Time I Lied and this time he enthralls us with a woman whose family had moved into an old Victorian house when she was small. They lasted three weeks at Baneberry Hall in Vermont and her father wrote a best-selling memoir of their time there. Now Maggie Holt finds herself the owner of the house. Is it really haunted or is there something more sinister going on?

The Last Flight by Julie Clark - Two women decide to change identities when they meet in a bar at JFK.

Claire is trying to escape her marriage while Eva is equally desperate to forget hers. But when Eva’s plane goes down, Claire is forced to assume her identity. Then the surprises and suspense starts.
