Chapter 33 - Something New

There are some really good books which have been released this summer and, as I've already told you, I love new books. While we can't necessarily go to any fun events or over-socialize, we can read some of the terrific books which have just been published.

Here are a few I've enjoyed this summer.

The Woman Before Wallis: A Novel of Windsors, Vanderbilts, and Royal Scandal by Bryn Turnbull - As you know I love historical fiction and this is one of the better ones I've read recently. In 1926 Thelma Morgan marries Viscount Duke Furness and shortly thereafter catches the eye of Edward, Prince of Wales. Their affair goes on for several years, their love is threatened when Thelma’s sister, Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt, becomes embroiled in a scandal. This was a quick and interesting read.

Mexican Gothic by Sylvia Moreno-Garcia - Part ghost story, part love story but a captivating read. After receiving a troubling letter from her cousin Catalina, Noemi Taboada travels to the mountains where her cousin lives to investigate. Things are as strange as her cousin has indicated and soon Noemi struggles to resist the hold High Place has on them both. If you enjoy gothic novels, this book is for you.

The Confessions of Frannie Langton by Sara Collins - Frannie Langton is accused of the brutal double murder of her employers, a renowned scientist and his wife. Her confessions reveal much more than Victorian England really wants to know.

The Dearly Beloved by Cara Wall - This book was a Jenna Bush book club selection. The story is about two young ministers who jointly hired to lead the historic Third Presbyterian Church through the tumultuous early 1960's. The book is beautifully written and is a compelling and surprising story.

Bonnie by Christine Schwartz - Schwartz is best known for her novel Drowning Ruth and delivers a clever look into Bonnie Parker of Bonnie and Clyde fame. While this is a novel it does make you think of what an intelligent young woman would do for love.
