Chapter 20 - The Moveable Feast

Hushpuppies

As you all know I love my adopted home, South Carolina - specifically North Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas. The weather is beautiful, the people sincerely warm, the beach is fantastic and the food, well the food is mouth-watering. The best hushpuppies hands down (and we have tried quite a few) are at The Bar-B-Que House in North Myrtle Beach. The rest of their menu is really good too!

For the most amazing homemade biscuits you'd have to go to Hoskins Restaurant, also in North Myrtle.

If you want a French flair to your food, just head to The Brentwood Restaurant in Little River. For a southern buffet spread that is out of this world go no further than Simply Southern Smokehouse in Myrtle Beach. If it is a lovely afternoon tea you'd prefer, just go to Calabash Garden Tea Room very close by in Calabash, North Carolina.

Really you can't swing a cat without hitting a great place for food. If you don't want to pack on the calories, check out the books below which repeatedly mention food in their stories.

The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister - This clever book is about a chef who gives cooking lessons. In her class are eight very interesting people, each with their struggles and successes. As the book goes on, it is clear that each is seeking something other than good recipes from the class.

Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table by Ruth Reichl - Ruth Reichl was the editor of Gourmet magazine for years, among other foodie type jobs she has had. The first of Reichl's memoir trilogy, Tender at the Bone, is about her life in food from her mother's moniker as the "Queen of Mold" to Reichl's first taste of a souffle. Peppered throughout with recipes, this is a funny, poignant memoir.

The Red Sparrow Trilogy by Jason Matthews - The first in the trilogy, The Red Sparrow, was recently made into a movie with Jennifer Lawrence. While I have not seen it, I can tell you the books are excellent. Jason Matthews was a former CIA agent and his descriptions of spy craft are authentic and scary. One of the best parts is that at the end of every chapter, he gives a recipe for one of the things his characters ate in the chapter. The books will leave you hungry for more.

Julie and Julia by Julie Powell - A memoir of sorts, the book started out as a blog wherein Julie Powell decides that she is going to cook every recipe from Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. While the 524 recipes themselves are a monumental task, the obsession she develops to complete the book becomes a challenge to her career and ultimately, her marriage. Powell's descriptions of Child's recipes and her attempts to make them will definitely get you in the mood for French food.

Catering to Nobody by Diana Mott Davidson - Davidson writes cozy mysteries about a caterer named Goldy Bear. In this, the first of the series, Goldy caters a school fundraiser and may have just poisoned her former father-in-law. A funny, good mystery with recipes that you will want to try.
