Welcome to Beach Walk Book Talks

Is there anything better than a walk on the beach  and a talk about books?  I don't think so. If you love the beach and books this is the place for you.  Here we will talk about my favorite beach, North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and share books as we enjoy all the ocean has to show us.

About The Blog

The Story

My name is Vicki Baty.  I live and work in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina which has, in my humble opinion, one of the most beautiful beaches on the East Coast.  I walk the beach almost daily and am always awed by the beauty of the ocean, the freshness of the air, and the amazing sea creatures I see.  Not a day on the beach goes by without of few lines of John Masefield's poem Sea Fever echoing in my head...

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by..."

As I co-own a used and new book store, Bookends (www.bookendsonline.com)  in North Myrtle Beach, usually on these walks my husband, Dave, and I talk about the books I am reading.

You'll note that all my blog postings are the titles of books, but don't be fooled, the blog is not necessarily about that book, just a themed title!

So please, walk with me, talk with me as we enjoy this journey.

Chapter 34 - The Book of Steak

My apologies to my vegan or vegetarian readers but I have a theory about books - specifically I believe there are steak books and potato chip books. Steak books are books which stay with you a long time after you read them. You chew on them, talk about them, ruminate on them. They can be fat or thick, long or short, but they still stick to your ribs. You generally can't read two in a row. Normally you have to put a potato chip book between them. Potato chip books are books you read quickly. They are good but not filling. They are a pleasure while you are reading them and you might be able to read a couple back to back but they don't sustain you. You forget them quickly but remember t

Chapter 33 - One Hit Wonder

There are so many books out there that are one hit wonders, in other words, the author has written one sensational novel and no more. I don't assume that it is easy to write a book or that people zip through the writing of them. Some books have taken decades to write while other authors spit books out every other month. I once heard Dorothea Benton Frank say that it is "a lot of work to write a book you read in three days." There are quite a few authors who only wrote one book and that one a smash hit! Here are some of the best. Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden - This is is wonderful historical novel of a young Japanese girl sold to a geisha house in the years before and during World

Chapter 32 - Catching Fire

I was thinking about this - what makes a book catch fire? To be traditionally published presumably an author needs to have a good story to begin with. Many times debut novels sputter and die only to have a second or third novel "catch fire" and make the author's name in the book world. Often though, the hot novel isn't as good as the first and it is only after the best seller that the author's other novels take off. Here are some authors whose bestselling novel wasn't their first but led readers to explore their body of work and enjoy some earlier novels better than the "hot" one. Ruth Ware - Ruth Ware became well known when her novel The Woman in Cabin 10 rose to the bestseller list in

Chapter 31 - Take Me With You

The rest of my summer will be (except for a few long weekends in Baltimore) here at home. Being in North Myrtle Beach for the summer is not a bad thing. The weather is beautiful, the beach is one of the prettiest I've ever seen, and we get to meet all sorts of wonderful people from different parts of the United States and the world even. I do get a little restless though and sometimes I want to go someplace else, if only for a little while. That is where reading comes in. It is so easy to travel to other places while staying at home. Not only can I go back and forth in time but I can go to any country I want. Even better for me, I can learn a little about the country as well. Here are
