Welcome to Beach Walk Book Talks

Is there anything better than a walk on the beach  and a talk about books?  I don't think so. If you love the beach and books this is the place for you.  Here we will talk about my favorite beach, North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and share books as we enjoy all the ocean has to show us.

About The Blog

The Story

My name is Vicki Baty.  I live and work in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina which has, in my humble opinion, one of the most beautiful beaches on the East Coast.  I walk the beach almost daily and am always awed by the beauty of the ocean, the freshness of the air, and the amazing sea creatures I see.  Not a day on the beach goes by without of few lines of John Masefield's poem Sea Fever echoing in my head...

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by..."

As I co-own a used and new book store, Bookends (www.bookendsonline.com)  in North Myrtle Beach, usually on these walks my husband, Dave, and I talk about the books I am reading.

You'll note that all my blog postings are the titles of books, but don't be fooled, the blog is not necessarily about that book, just a themed title!

So please, walk with me, talk with me as we enjoy this journey.

Chapter 30 - Bookends

So how cool is that, a book with a title the same as the store name? July has flown by for me, vacation, an author meet and greet at the store, a Christmas in July book exchange at our book club. Whew, before we know it September will be here! We've had a lot of good books we've read in book club. Most of them 300 pages or so. Periodically we have a few longer ones. Alexis, our facilitator and host, usually picks very interesting books or other club members recommend the books. If you recommend a book, you act as the facilitator. We've had some great discussions and some very agreeable disagreements over whether we were fans of the book. It is a great group. We are all very respectf

Chapter 29 - The Vacationers

This is a great time of year here in North Myrtle Beach. We have loads of vacationers and they come into the store usually looking for one thing - a good beach read. There are so many good books out there both fiction and non-fiction but a beach read is almost a genre all to itself. A beach read is an escape for both your body and your mind. The perfect beach read differs from person to person but generally it is a paperback either trade or mass market with excitement, romance, interesting relationship stories, adventure or something you can easily read in a week or less. It is a rare thing when a customer wants a business or computer book for the beach although sometimes history books

Chapter 28 - Waking Walt

We just spent a week at the "happiest place on earth" and while very hot, it was indeed a happy experience. Dave and I had a commitment to view some property in Orlando, Florida and decided to do it at the same time our youngest daughter and her family were vacationing there. We saw the requisite Disney sites and, of course, couldn't miss the Harry Potter themed park at Universal. Some pics are below. I started to think about books which take place in or are about amusement parks. Most of them are scary, which makes sense, I guess because turning a happy place into a threatening one is a good book, right? Thankfully, no tragedies occurred during our theme park time but here are some boo

Chapter 27 - This Is How It Always Is

Hi everyone! When Vicki asked me to share a few of my favorite summertime beach reads, it took me awhile to narrow the list down to only five. I’ve been blogging and bookstagramming about books for over 10 years, so I’ve had ample opportunity to read up on boatloads of books. And what I haven’t read for social media and blogging, I’ve simply read because I love the written word… truly, storytelling is the quickest way to someone’s heart. Without further ado, allow me to share a few of my favorite stories and storytellers. Vacation. One little word can bring to mind so many different connotations. From an extended family vacation with little ones that keep us laughing to a romantic couple’s

Chapter 26 - Independent's Day!

Over the year I receive a lot of books from independently published authors. They want me to read their books, review them and then put them in the store. Sometimes they are good, sometimes not so good, and often the books are terrific. What do I mean when I say independently published? These are books which are self-published or published by a small independent publishing house. It is really hard to make it in the traditionally published world so many authors choose to publish differently. It doesn't mean their books aren't good (usually), it just means they've taken a differently route to publication. In fact, some authors previously traditionally published have started to publish th
