Welcome to Beach Walk Book Talks

Is there anything better than a walk on the beach  and a talk about books?  I don't think so. If you love the beach and books this is the place for you.  Here we will talk about my favorite beach, North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and share books as we enjoy all the ocean has to show us.

About The Blog

The Story

My name is Vicki Baty.  I live and work in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina which has, in my humble opinion, one of the most beautiful beaches on the East Coast.  I walk the beach almost daily and am always awed by the beauty of the ocean, the freshness of the air, and the amazing sea creatures I see.  Not a day on the beach goes by without of few lines of John Masefield's poem Sea Fever echoing in my head...

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by..."

As I co-own a used and new book store, Bookends (www.bookendsonline.com)  in North Myrtle Beach, usually on these walks my husband, Dave, and I talk about the books I am reading.

You'll note that all my blog postings are the titles of books, but don't be fooled, the blog is not necessarily about that book, just a themed title!

So please, walk with me, talk with me as we enjoy this journey.

Chapter 8 - Almost True Hollywood Stories

In mid January Bookends had the pleasure of hosting a film crew and serving as one of the locations for a Lifetime movie in production. The movie's working title is "Icing on the Cake" and it is to be in Lifetime's fall lineup. We were one of several locations in North Myrtle Beach. As soon as we find out more, we will let you know. The crew was extremely professional, the actors lovely, and the director encouraging. I even got a chance to play a bookseller! I know, I know, it was so out of character for me! It made me start thinking about all the books which have been made into movies - some good, some bad. Here are my absolute favorite as Hollywood definitely kept to the story when t

Chapter 7 - The End of Your Life Book Club

Anytime an independent bookstore dies it is a sad event. We experienced this recently when in Baltimore cleaning out my mom's house. Greetings and Readings in Hunt Valley, Maryland closed it doors, after 49 years, on January 13, 2019. Dave and I were there on its last day and walking through the stripped down store, I was remembering all the wonderful times I had there. Originally the store was located closer to my home but about 13 years ago it moved to a suburb. G&R had the distinction of being the largest independent bookstore in Baltimore. So how does a business that has existed for almost 50 years become obsolete? Well, we asked one of the employees and she indicated a couple of t

Chapter 6 - Read Harder Part Three

So if you are ready for round three of reading harder, here are some more suggestions for the remaining Reading Challenge categories. Read a Book Becoming a Movie - There are a surprising number of books to movies this year, at least 25 by my last count and that is only the ones which have been announced. Some recommendations for this category are Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple, Pet Sematary by Stephen King and The Rosie Project by Graham Simsion. Read a Non-Fiction Book - I do love non-fiction so I am looking forward to this category. May I suggest Educated by Tara Westover, Southern Discomfort by Tena Clark, Leonardo DaVinci by Walter Isaacson or Things That Matter by Charles

Chapter 5 - Read Harder Part Two

As promised, this week I am going to give you suggestions for some of the Reading Challenge categories I posted last week. Next week I will give you recommendations for the final five categories. Read a Book Published in 2019 - So many to choose from here but there are some terrific books to look forward to this year. My suggestions are The Last Girls of Paris by Pam Jenoff, Lost Roses by Martha Hall Kelly or I Know Who You Are by Alice Feeney. All are known authors whose writing and previous books were very good. Read a Book That Takes Place in Another Country - I love being an armchair traveler and this is one of my favorite categories. Recommendations here are The Red Sparrow trilogy
