Welcome to Beach Walk Book Talks

Is there anything better than a walk on the beach  and a talk about books?  I don't think so. If you love the beach and books this is the place for you.  Here we will talk about my favorite beach, North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and share books as we enjoy all the ocean has to show us.

About The Blog

The Story

My name is Vicki Baty.  I live and work in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina which has, in my humble opinion, one of the most beautiful beaches on the East Coast.  I walk the beach almost daily and am always awed by the beauty of the ocean, the freshness of the air, and the amazing sea creatures I see.  Not a day on the beach goes by without of few lines of John Masefield's poem Sea Fever echoing in my head...

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by..."

As I co-own a used and new book store, Bookends (www.bookendsonline.com)  in North Myrtle Beach, usually on these walks my husband, Dave, and I talk about the books I am reading.

You'll note that all my blog postings are the titles of books, but don't be fooled, the blog is not necessarily about that book, just a themed title!

So please, walk with me, talk with me as we enjoy this journey.

Chapter 4 - Read Harder

We have had quite a few customers this month who have wanted some recommendations for how to get more out of their reading lives. The request comes in a lot of different ways from, "How can I read better books?" to "I am in a rut, I need different authors." to "I feel like all I read is fluff, I want something of substance." As a bookseller, blogger, and voracious reader, this request is hard. Books are a really personal thing and what I enjoy you might not, and vice versa. But in walk the Reading Challenges. They range from a manageable list of twelve to an overwhelming group of 50 reading goals. There are websites where you can keep your list of books which encourages a type of readin

Chapter 3 - Life With Mother

We are in the process of cleaning out my mother's house which means many back and forth trips from South Carolina to Maryland. This is an arduous process as we are trying to make sense and good decisions about a houseful of items collected over 50 years. Being a Depression baby, Mom saved everything! Some of the things we know we want, others we know have some value, and still others have no value to anyone (sorry Mom!). It also gives me a good understanding of how much stuff Dave and I need to clean out from our lives even though we have only lived in our house 13 years. Anyway my down time is spent with family and friends, all of whom were happy to pitch in and help, God bless them. T

Chapter 2 - Football For Dummies

Anyone who knows me knows, I am a football girl. My mother used to say that my first sentence was "Go Colts!" during the 1958 Championships when the Baltimore Colts defeated the NY Giants. It could have been or it could have been any number of curses that came out of my mom's mouth during a football game. Anyway, having jettisoned the Colts when Bob Irsay had the footballs to move them to Indianapolis, I embraced the Ravens when they came to Baltimore. And this year, for the first time in four painful years, they are back in the playoffs. By the time this blog is published we will know if they will continue but right now I am reveling in their December 30th win. I started thinking about

Book 3 - Chapter 1- The Mountain Between Us

Welcome to January! We just spent a few days in the mountains of South Carolina, a little town called Westminster. Dave fished and I, um, read and wrote and ruminated as I always do this time of year. I am all about making lists - lists of things I want to do this year, lists of things I have to do, lists of books I want to read and places I want to visit. In fact the only time I am not making lists either in my head or on paper is when I am reading or working in the store. Both are places of respite for me. I am also starting to plan out my reads for the Savannah Book Festival in February. So my lists include books I want to read for that. I am part of two book clubs, one online and
