Welcome to Beach Walk Book Talks

Is there anything better than a walk on the beach  and a talk about books?  I don't think so. If you love the beach and books this is the place for you.  Here we will talk about my favorite beach, North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and share books as we enjoy all the ocean has to show us.

About The Blog

The Story

My name is Vicki Baty.  I live and work in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina which has, in my humble opinion, one of the most beautiful beaches on the East Coast.  I walk the beach almost daily and am always awed by the beauty of the ocean, the freshness of the air, and the amazing sea creatures I see.  Not a day on the beach goes by without of few lines of John Masefield's poem Sea Fever echoing in my head...

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by..."

As I co-own a used and new book store, Bookends (www.bookendsonline.com)  in North Myrtle Beach, usually on these walks my husband, Dave, and I talk about the books I am reading.

You'll note that all my blog postings are the titles of books, but don't be fooled, the blog is not necessarily about that book, just a themed title!

So please, walk with me, talk with me as we enjoy this journey.

Chapter 51 - The Twelve Days of Christmas, Part Two

Happy New Year's Eve friends! I can't believe we have come to the end of another year and are ready to close the book on 2018 and start a new one. This is always a time of reflection for me as for many people. I review what was good about the year, what could have been better and how I can bring more joy, peace and happiness to myself and others in the next year. It can be a hard plan to follow but talking about books is always a good start. So, without further delay, here are the next six books to take you through the final six days of The Twelve Days of Christmas. Day 7 - Classic - A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. This is perhaps Dickens' best known work and if you have never rea

Chapter 50 - The Twelve Days of Christmas

Unlike what many businesses seem to think, The Twelve Days of Christmas are the days between Christmas and Epiphany on January 6. Epiphany is the day when the wise men brought gifts to the Christ child. While in Elizabethan England a royal celebration might go on for all twelve days, today that is probably not do-able. One of the more imaginative ways of celebrating these cold, gray days of winter is to give a gift for each day. What could be better than giving a book for each day? A used book store is the way to go if you are thinking about this as the books will be much less expensive that way. Here is a list of genres and books to share for the Twelve Days of Christmas. Day 1 - Histo

Chapter 49 - Jolabokaflod

There is a lovely Icelandic tradition call Jolabokaflod or Yule (Christmas) Book Flood. It is a tradition so beloved that most books in Iceland are sold between September and December. As a country Iceland has a long and proud literary heritage dating back to the middle ages. The tiny island currently publishes more books per capita than any other nation in the world. Jolabokaflod though got its start during World War II when currency restrictions limited the amount of imported gift items. Imported paper restrictions were not so steep so the tradition of giving books for Christmas was determined to be the thing to do. The Flood begins with the release of Bokatidindi, a catalog of new pub

Chapter 48 - Finding Father Christmas

While some of you are not scampering around looking for Christmas presents for your nearest and dearest, others of us are starting to go into panic mode for the best gift. Thankfully there are some terrific new books out there to grab for your nearest and dearest. November and December are great months for new books and any reader knows, books are an easy gift. It is important to match the book with the reader however, so do be mindful of what your favorite reader enjoys. I always appreciate books that my family and friends have read and decide I must read too. It is sort of like getting an introduction to a new friend. Here are some books on my giving or receiving books this year. Givin

Chapter 47 - My Year of Rest and Relaxation

So, no lie, the above title is that of a recently published book. A year of rest and relaxation would drive me insane as I recently found out when confronted by a short period of no outside activity. In early November I develop a painful and serious but not life-threatening illness. It required about a week of at-home activity until the meds could properly kick in. I, naturally, took the opportunity to read, and to watch movies when my eyes got too tired to read. The former was more productive than the latter, for sure, and I found myself reading some Advanced Reader Editions and galleys (digital copies) I had received for books to be published in 2019. I also caught up on some new auth
