Welcome to Beach Walk Book Talks

Is there anything better than a walk on the beach  and a talk about books?  I don't think so. If you love the beach and books this is the place for you.  Here we will talk about my favorite beach, North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and share books as we enjoy all the ocean has to show us.

About The Blog

The Story

My name is Vicki Baty.  I live and work in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina which has, in my humble opinion, one of the most beautiful beaches on the East Coast.  I walk the beach almost daily and am always awed by the beauty of the ocean, the freshness of the air, and the amazing sea creatures I see.  Not a day on the beach goes by without of few lines of John Masefield's poem Sea Fever echoing in my head...

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by..."

As I co-own a used and new book store, Bookends (www.bookendsonline.com)  in North Myrtle Beach, usually on these walks my husband, Dave, and I talk about the books I am reading.

You'll note that all my blog postings are the titles of books, but don't be fooled, the blog is not necessarily about that book, just a themed title!

So please, walk with me, talk with me as we enjoy this journey.

Chapter 25 - Best Beach Ever

We are into the full swing of summer down here. The weather is bright and sunny. The beach is beautiful, the water warm and inviting. What could be more relaxing than sitting on the beach with a good read? If you are a beach reader, like me, there are plenty of good books to keep you occupied. Sometimes I like to read light, easy books that I don't have to keep my mind on. Other times I prefer to get into a suspense or spy thriller that may otherwise seem too dark and scary. Then, there is always the big book which may seem too daunting unless you have a couple of hours to put away a few hundred pages. Whatever your preference, here are a few books to satisfy any of these urges. Camin

Chapter 24 - North and South

This is the time of year when those of us who live at the beach realize how many friends and relatives we actually have. This is a good thing because many of these wonderful people head south to visit us and enjoy the beautiful place where we live. I always wonder why these visits don't necessarily come in the winter when we have way better weather than those north of us but since many "frelatives" (friends+relatives=frelatives) have children in school, it makes sense for our summers to be full of visitors. It is fun being able to show people all the attributes of living at the beach and the beach itself is only a small part of that. We have water parks and amusement parks, a boardwalk, t

Chapter 23 - As You Like It

We get a lot of people in the store who want recommendations. While I always have lots of books to tell them about, (and we do have over 20,000 books in the store after all), it is not always easy to come up with something someone will enjoy. Usually I ask them what the last good book they read was and whether they want something similar or different to that book. Thankfully I have been pretty successful with this approach. Thankfully, as well, there are a lot of good books out there that have like themes and styles without being exact copies. Elizabeth Gilbert (of Eat, Pray, Love fame), believes there are ideas floating around the universe just looking for a human to manifest them. Whi

Chapter 22 - The Summer Wind

Here it is the beginning of June and families are starting to spill into North Myrtle Beach for vacation. Summer is my favorite time of year and has always been. It is a time of picnics, relaxing at the beach, and, of course, reading. In North Myrtle there are so many things to do besides the beach. Some of my favorites include miniature golf (love Mutiny Bay, Mayday, and Black Pearl in Cherry Grove), shopping along Main Street or even in Calabash (great consignment shops there), and listening to the music on Main Street every Thursday evening. There is a beautiful hiking path through a nature preserve in Cherry Grove and Vereen Gardens in Little River is another delightful place to jus
