Welcome to Beach Walk Book Talks

Is there anything better than a walk on the beach  and a talk about books?  I don't think so. If you love the beach and books this is the place for you.  Here we will talk about my favorite beach, North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and share books as we enjoy all the ocean has to show us.

About The Blog

The Story

My name is Vicki Baty.  I live and work in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina which has, in my humble opinion, one of the most beautiful beaches on the East Coast.  I walk the beach almost daily and am always awed by the beauty of the ocean, the freshness of the air, and the amazing sea creatures I see.  Not a day on the beach goes by without of few lines of John Masefield's poem Sea Fever echoing in my head...

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by..."

As I co-own a used and new book store, Bookends (www.bookendsonline.com)  in North Myrtle Beach, usually on these walks my husband, Dave, and I talk about the books I am reading.

You'll note that all my blog postings are the titles of books, but don't be fooled, the blog is not necessarily about that book, just a themed title!

So please, walk with me, talk with me as we enjoy this journey.

Chapter 26 - The Gift

After spending a wonderful Thanksgiving with our son and his family, we traveled home early Saturday morning so I could could help greet customers during Small Business Saturday at Bookends. It was a great day - cider and cookies and 10% off everything in the store! Lots of people took advantage of the event to stock up on new items, gifts, and used books, of course. On the way home Dave and I started to talk about books I would gift to others from this year's huge amount of new books. I personally love receiving books as Christmas gifts (yes, I was THAT kid) and usually have a huge stack of books on my own wish list. So here are some books I'd recommend gifting to the booklover in your l

Chapter 24 - The Bookseller's Tale

As the year winds down and Thanksgiving is in the air I think about all the wonderful books I've read this year and how grateful I am to have a job which includes reading and talking to others about books. Many of the terrific books I've read have been recommended by others. Norma Smyka, my business partner, good friend, and a prolific reader in her own right, has recommended many books to me. Without her reading suggestions I may never have come to experience the storytelling of Chris Bohjalian, Sara Gruen, Karin Slaughter, or even Tess Gerritsen. Our customers have provided much fodder for my reading life as well. It is a joy to go to work and learn about another wonderful book someone

Chapter 23 - Charm City

In late October, Dave and I had the opportunity to stay with our 6 year old grandson in Baltimore while his 'rents went away for an anniversary weekend. Having left the area over 12 years ago, it is always pleasant but sometimes a surprise to go back. We make the trip several times a year to visit family and friends. On the road trip up, besides solving all the problems of the modern world, we started talking about writers who have made Baltimore their home or who have written about Baltimore and Maryland. Baltimore's literary tradition goes back a long way and includes Edgar Allen Poe, H.L. Mencken, Edna St. Vincent Millay, John Dos Passos and, of course, F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald

Chapter 22 - Low Country Summer

Finally, having a weekend away, we headed down to Mt Pleasant, just a little more than two hours south of us and just minutes from downtown Charleston. We usually just spend our time in Charleston which is very beautiful and historic. This visit took us into some of the surrounding areas we had never seen before. So many wonderful Southern writers live and/or write about the Low Country and for good reason. Being surrounded by the majesty of oaks dripping with Spanish moss, the whimsy of beautiful birds (see picture), the quiet loveliness of the marsh and the peculiarities of nature give a story-rich environment. Our travels this weekend took us to Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, Shem
